Todays Sports Villains

We tend to think because if it is in the media that it is a new phenomenon. Major sport figures being charged with spousal or girlfriend abuse or drug usage. Don't get me wrong it should be reported and the players should be dealt with harshly, especially those charged with abuse. In my opinion that should be given a pink slip....bye bye, find a new job. With drugs they should be given an opportunity to rehabilitate themselves. My point is, this is not new, this not generational, this has been happening since the beginning. The only difference is todays athlete can't hide behind the protection of their team or the media, because they did't want players reputations ruined. So don't be naive. The bad ones have always been with us, now they are getting called out and punished for their stupidity. rg

More Shows added & The life of a solo musician

I have added some additional shows to the list. I hope some of you can make it. On a side note, I host a Song & Story Singer Songwriter show every third Friday of the month at Banter in Denton Texas. I select 4 singer songwriters and they tell a little story about the song they wrote. It is form 8pm until 10pm. So, each artist gets about 6 songs each. We have been doing it now for almost a year. I volunteered to do this for two reasons. First to get Singer Songwriters more recognition and hopeful more money and to help Banter Bistro. We have been bringing in on average around 25 to 50 people depending on the night and how many come into see a particle performer. However, with all that said the tips these people get is way below par and the reason is not the performance. People are very attentive and very receptive. Staying the entire show. So for those of you who are not singer songwriters let me tell you that what we do is not easy. We write the lyrics, place the lyrics to music, then practice practice practice and practice again until we feel like we are ready to perform. Then we repeat the process over and over again. To get up in front of a crowd of strangers and sing songs that are personal to us takes a lot of nerve. After all these songs are a part of us and we are sharing it with you. So, my question is how much is it worth to you to listen to someone who is playing for FREE and you are enjoying the music. Some of us make a living doing this. Ask yourself, would you expect a plumber to come out and fix a leaking pipe for free???? They would laugh at you. But, singer songwriters most of the time have no other option to play for free and depend on you the audience to compensate them for their hard. Next time you are out for the evening and there is a person on a stage singing and you see a tip jar, please show them you really do care. Even if it is $1.00 they will appreciate it. Peace love and music Rg

My Weekend!!

It's 1:30am on Sunday morning and I'm thinking about my next gig. I had a great show at Shaw's Patio & Grill Friday evening....too great..because I woke up at 950am and I had a 10am gig. Luckily I dress fast and this gig was only 3 miles away. Spent the morning playing music and hangin out with my friends. I feel like I just need that chance to open for somebody. You know what I mean..just give me a chance to sing in front of a large listening audience. So, today is Father's Day and I will spend the morning skyping with my son in Korea and the afternoon having lunch with my youngest son. Then it's off to another gig in Fort Worth. This time Zio Carlos Magnolia Brew House. I love this one!! Always have a good time playing there. Okay I am off for now Peace Love and Music my friends and fans Rg

Life of a solo musician.

I have played music around the DFW area for 10 years. It amazes me how difficult it is to get a replies back from venues, even after you have played there a few times and they really like your music. Don't get me wrong, I know there is more than a few solo musicians looking for a gig in the area....but sometimes it can be 6 months. My policy is, I will continue to email you until one of two things...either you book me or you tell me my services are no longer needed. I would like to start a coalition of solo singer songwriters. I feel there is no true representation for us. Most booking agents are interested in bands. That is where the money is for them and I can't blame them. But, there has to be a spot for us solo people. If any of you know a someone that actually has the best interest of solo performers in mind when booking, please let me know. I am not upset with booking agents or venues. I can only imagine the number of bands and musicians you are inundated with on a daily or weekly basis. But, I want to play and if I am told I am good and my music is good then I believe I am good. So, book me!! :) Peace Love and music Rg

This was my weekend

So, this is how I spent my weekend. Started with a trip to Ikea on Saturday....I don't recommend a trip to Ikea on a Saturday....ever. But, when you're with your best friend it makes it a lot more entertaining. Around 7pm I started my gig at Rusty's Tacos. There was a small but welcoming group eating outside. Earlier before that gig I got a call from my Kim Nall who play with Levi Cobb and The Big Smoke. Their opening act cancelled and she asked if I could fill in. I asks what time. She said I needed to be there around 8:30. I played my set at Rusty's.....got my two free taco's ....drove them to the house and placed them gently in the fridge. I then drove to Banter for my second gig of the evening. It was a very good evening there. The crowd was amazingly responsive to all my original songs. Around 11:55pm I read about a Singer Songwriter Showdown at Queen City Music Hall in Fort Worth on Sunday evening. I took a chance and sent an email not really expecting to get in on that days list. The next morning I woke up to an email saying I could take the last time slot at 7:20pm. Of course I said yes. I got here early (my normal) and ran into Luke Wade at the door. We talked a bit and then I was shown where I would be playing by Amy. It turned out to be a great night of singer songwriters and I was able to meet and talk to some very nice people. All in All a great weekend. Peace Love Music Rg

New Ideas on Selling Music

I have a new idea for selling my music. It's no secret. What I want to do is buy 4gb USB Flash Drives and load my Ep "Faraway Girl", artwork, and the lyrics on to them. My feelings are that although some people still like to buy the physical copy, most want to upload to their computer and then download on to their iPhone. The cool thing is if you buy it you get a 4gb flash drive. I would sell them for $10.00 and if I load "On The Run" it would be around $13-$15. I would like to get some feedback on this. What do you think? We as musicians are constantly having to think of ways to sell our music. I used to give it away, but to me that just cheapens all the hard work you put into making it. Let me know Rg

Support your local musician!

The audience needs to be educated on what we do to prepare for a show. This is not something we just woke up one morning and started doing. It took years of practice to build confidence, write good songs, train our voices and to create the music. It doesn't just end there. We practice every day. Singing, writing and playing. Before a show sometimes the nerves set in because we want to do a good job for you the audience. We practice either the day before or the day of the show. When you see a solo act playing think about this. First, it is our job, second, there is gas used to get there and home, wear and tear on our instruments, vehicles and equipment, Third, we are probably playing for free so we depend on your tips to make a living, Four, yes we love doing it....but do you love your job enough you would work for free? Some of our sets are 3 hours long. Please, don't think just because it looks easy that it is. If it were then every one could do it. :) So, should you tip? Yes, if you are enjoying the music. The amount should depend on how mud you are enjoying it. Please support your local musicians....they are playing not just for themselves....it's for you too. Rg

Denton Community Market!!!

What to do on a Saturday morning....Go to Denton Community Market!!! Kati Trice's hard work makes it bigger and better every year. There are 50 plus vendors with everything from food, coffee, drinks, candles, desserts and much much more. Also, starting at 9am the music starts. You get to hear some great songwriters playing every hour until 1pm. So, if you are an early riser come out and enjoy the morning at the Community Market. See me there next Saturday 26th at 9am playing all of my original songs!!!!! Rg

What process do you go through when creating songs?

I am curious to know how your songs come to you. I feel we all pull from life's experiences. But, we also have the ability to imagine and create stories. I often get the tune on my guitar before the words come. For me it makes it easier to make the words fit the tune. Another good thing is to surround yourself with great songwriters. They can be inspiring. I also have many half written songs that I can pull from to help complete a project I'm working on. Please leave a comment on your process. peace, love , music rg

Creating My Songs

Between working on my house and playing music gigs. I am also trying to complete a new song. The way I go about writing a song is by picking up the guitar "Amelia" and trying out new tunes. Once I get a tune that I like I write the words so that they flow with the music. All songwriters have their own style. This one works for me.
Because I am self taught on the guitar and do not consider myself to be strong in that area I work on my lyrics. I want them to capture your attention. It might be the first line to a song or the second verse.  But, I want my words to be different. Not following any of the norms...they may rhyme but when you are listening I want that next line to catch  you off guard.
Hope all of you are having an amazing year and that it will continue.
Peace Love and Music

"Voices Carry"

I played at Banter in Denton, Tx Friday April 4th with Ellie Meyer. We are collaborating on a music venture called "Voices Carry". We play original songs with a couple of covers added in a song swap style. Hopefully we will coming to your town soon. If you don't mind listening and telling us what you think. I have attached Ellie's Facebook page and of course you can listen to me here. I have been writing and singing in the Dallas / Fort Worth area for about 10 years. I will be in Austin the 23rd and 24th of May. Please check my Facebook event page for future shows.
Richard Gilbert was born and raised in Fort Worth Texas. A 4th generation Texan. Now living in Denton, TX. As a child he traveled with his family many times to the west and north western parts of the US. It is said this is where he got his need to travel and to write. The first time he picked up a guitar was in 1969. His father bought him a 12 string Airline from Sears. He fell in love with the sound and practiced night and day on James Taylor, Elton John and Gordon Lightfoot tunes. Fast forward 2004..after a long career and raising a family Richard decided to get serious about his music. The words tell stories, a little about himself and a little about others in his life. Enough to get you listening and wondering if he wrote the song with you in mind He is just beginning.
